CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES
Special accommodations will be made for children with Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes. Section 504 of the American Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against children with disabilities. At Peace of Mind Daycare, we know how difficult it is to find child care for a child with diabetes because it entails teaching the child’s caregiver about checking sugars, insulin administration, low and high blood sugars, and carbohydrate counting. A Childcare facility must provide reasonable accommodations for children with diabetes which means blood sugar checks; however, they are not required to administer insulin which means many parents will have to leave work/school to come inject their child. At Peace of Mind Daycare, we will have trained staff on board to administer insulin in accordance with the child’s parents/doctor’s instructions. The child’s endocrinologist must complete a 504 Plan, upon the child’s enrollment to Peace of Mind Daycare, which specifies the required treatment needed for the child.
(Copy of the 504 Plan can be picked up at the Director's office).
Peace of Mind Daycare will ensure that blood sugar checks are done prior to every meal, and/or if the child shows symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and/or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Peace of Mind Daycare will appropriately treat low blood sugars (with fruit juice and/or what the 504 Plan indicates) and give insulin corrections for high sugars (insulin amount indicted on the 504 Plan).
Peace of Mind Daycare will ensure the number of carbohydrates are counted at every meal, and the appropriate amount of insulin is administered by injection or insulin pump as per the insulin to carbohydrate ratio instructed on the 504 Plan.
Each child will have their own log where teachers will record daily blood sugar numbers, number of carbohydrates eaten, insulin administered, and other information a parent will need to know at the end of the day.
Parents must provide the diabetes testing supplies to the Peace of Mind Daycare. Supplies include: blood sugar meter, battery backup, test strips, lancets, glucagon (severe hypoglycemia), syringes, and insulin. The testing supplies for each child will be put in their own labeled plastic container and kept in the child’s classroom out of children’s reach. The insulin (to be labeled with the date bottle was opened and child’s name) will be kept in a refrigerator in the Director’s office. Since insulin is only good for 27 – 30 days, parents must ensure a new bottle is provided to Peace of Mind before expiration.
Peace of Mind Daycare will appropriately discard syringes.
